An airport outfit formula for looking put together and feeling comfortable

← Back to the blog · FASHION

The airport outfit has a lot of jobs. It needs to survive a car ride, security, walking, sitting and a temperature change—or three. Looking put together is a bonus I’m happy to make room for, but comfort has to be part of the plan.

My FashionPass airport outfit video offers one take. Here’s a repeatable formula you can build from pieces you already own, without turning a travel day into an elaborate styling project.

Start with a comfortable base

Pick bottoms that feel good when seated and a top that works on its own. Try the outfit sitting down for a few minutes before packing it. A waistband that feels fine standing up can tell a different story once you’re in an airplane seat.

A matching set can make the outfit feel intentional quickly. Separates in a coordinated palette work just as well. The useful part is having pieces that move together, rather than a collection of items you’ll keep adjusting.

Add a layer you can easily carry

A shirt, cardigan or light jacket gives you options without requiring a whole outfit change. Think about your departure city, destination and time in transit. Keep the layer accessible instead of burying it beneath everything in your bag.

If you’re traveling between Miami and Atlanta, dress for the actual forecast at both ends. A familiar route doesn’t guarantee familiar weather.

Make the shoes earn their place

Choose secure, comfortable shoes you already know you can walk in. A travel day is a poor time to discover that a new pair rubs. Consider how easily you can handle your shoes if your security screening requires removing them, while following the airport’s instructions.

Keep accessories simple

A hands-free bag can keep your essentials close while you manage luggage. Give your ID or passport one consistent place and return it there each time. Jewelry should feel comfortable through the whole journey, including when you’re carrying a shoulder bag or resting against a seat.

Before leaving home, do a quick carry test: put on the complete outfit and pick up the bags you’re actually taking. Anything that slips, snags or feels awkward now will be more annoying in a terminal.

Pack the arrival plan, too

If you’re heading straight to a dinner or event, keep one easy change accessible. Otherwise, let the travel outfit be a travel outfit. A simple, comfortable look with a clean silhouette can still feel stylish without asking too much of you.
